Cultivating Digital Growth
Agriculture remains the backbone of Gilgit-Baltistan’s rural economy, and the GB IT Board is leading efforts to modernize this vital sector through technology. Recognizing the potential of digital tools to boost productivity, improve market access, and ensure food security, the Board is introducing smart agriculture solutions tailored to the region’s unique challenges and opportunities. A key initiative involves the development of Digital Agriculture Platforms that connect farmers with real-time information on weather forecasts, crop advisory services, pest control, and irrigation management. These platforms empower farmers to make data-driven decisions, improving crop yields and reducing losses due to unpredictable weather or disease. The Board is also promoting the use of GIS and remote sensing technologies for land mapping, soil analysis, and water resource monitoring. These tools help agricultural departments plan more effectively and support sustainable land use practices. Through mobile apps and SMS alerts, the GB IT Board is enabling direct communication between experts and farmers, ensuring that even those in remote valleys can access critical guidance and support. Additionally, training programs on digital literacy and agri-tech tools are equipping local farmers—especially women and youth—to adopt new practices and technologies. In partnership with local organizations and government departments, the Board is working to create e-marketplaces where farmers can sell their produce directly to buyers, reducing the role of middlemen and increasing their profits. With these efforts, the GB IT Board is transforming agriculture into a more efficient, innovative, and sustainable sector—ensuring that technology becomes a tool of empowerment for farmers across Gilgit-Baltistan.
